VBET ambassador Brian Hughes has been named jumps jockey of the year at the 2020 Derby Awards.
Hughes has been recognised by the horse racing media for last season’s outstanding performances in the saddle which earned him the title of 2019-20 champion jockey for the first time.
The star jockey, who finished the last campaign with 141 winners, fought off competition from Rachael Blackmore, Barry Geraghty and Paul Townend to earn the much-coveted award.
Hughes, currently leading this season’s championship, told Sky Sports Racing: “I didn’t expect it to be, fair.
“When you get nominated you always think, ‘Someone else will win that’.
“It’s a huge honour. Obviously the way the season (cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic) ended, it was a bit blank, really.
“But to be recognised and voted is an honour and is something I’m very proud of.”
