BREAKING: Fernando Torres confirms retirement from football

Former Liverpool and Chelsea forward Fernando Torres has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35. Torres posted the news to his 3.66 million followers on Twitter adding that he has called a press conference for Sunday to elaborate on his decision. https://twitter.com/Torres/status/1141934249362124801 Torres joined Sagan Tosu in July 2018 after leaving boyhood club Atletico Madrid for a second time. He has scored just four goals in 32 games for the J League side. The striker came through the youth system at Atletico, making his debut against Leganes in a Spanish second division game in March 2001. He helped Atletico gain promotion back to La Liga in 2002, and then established himself as one of the most prolific strikers in Spain, top-scoring for them in five successive seasons, which earned him a move to Liverpool. He scored 81 goals in 142 games for the Reds as he established himself as one of if not the greatest forward in Europe for a period, also contributing greatly to Spain winning Euro 2008 and the World Cup two years later. He joined Chelsea for £50million in January 2011, but injury and form issues meant that he was never able to consistently reproduce those Liverpool performances at Stamford Bridge. After a brief spell at Milan he rejoined Atletico, before seeing out his playing career in Japan.
