Ben Godfrey has revealed what Gareth Southgate told him after learning he had been called up to England's provisional squad for this summer's Euro 2020.
The 23-year-old was rewarded for his fantastic form throughout the campaign by being named in the 33-man Three Lions setup, which will be reduced to 26 by the time the tournament comes along.
The Everton centre-back believes that versatility has been key to him being given his first senior England call-up as he revealed what the national team manager discussed with him.
Godfrey told
evertonfc.com :
“Gareth Southgate called me to tell me I was in the provisional squad and that he was looking forward to me joining up with the team.
“The manager [Southgate] spoke about my versatility and I think being able to play across the backline for Everton during the season helped show that.
“I knew he was at Goodison for the game against Wolves [Everton’s 1-0 win on 19 May] but you don’t really think much about it as your focus is just to play well for Everton.
“There is a lot of competition to play for England as well so it’s about showing your quality over a long period of time.
“When you look at the quality of defenders we’ve got, and the players who didn’t make the squad, I know it is an achievement to have made the provisional squad, and now I just want to work hard and see what comes.”
