Barcelona president insists Leo Messi is not going anywhere

Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu has claimed the club’s captain Lionel Messi won’t be leaving Camp Nou anytime soon. Messi recently revealed that he was offered a lucrative lifetime contract but turned it down. On a radio appearance on Metro 95.1 he said: “It is true that Barcelona proposed me a contract for life, but what I said was that I do not want a contract that binds me like that. I want to be fine to continue playing and to continue fighting for goals here. Being here I can be for life, but not with a contract. Here I would stay a lifetime.” However, in the post-match press conference after 4-1 win over Celta Vigo, Barcelona president has claimed that Messi will stay with them for another five seasons: “Leo Messi will still play with us for the next two, three, four or five years. I have no doubts about that,” said Bartomeu. “Surely it will be the wish of all parties, if he (Lionel Messi) feels strong and ambitious, to extend this contract indefinitely. Ultimately it is he who must decide. He has earned the right to decide when he will stop playing football. But like he said a few weeks ago, he wants to finish his playing career at Barcelona. Over the next two or three seasons, our leader will continue to be Leo Messi. There's no doubt that he is still young, still strong. He is still ambitious.” Messi has contact with Catalan giants until 2021 and a clause in the deal means that the Argentinian can leave the club for free in the summer.
