Barcelona former star makes shock Virgil van Dijk remark

Former Barcelona star Carles Puyol believes Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is not the best centre-back in the world. Due to his form this season Van Dijk was regarded as the best in the world. Indeed, Liverpool currently have the best defensive record in the league. However, Puyol believes there’s one man who can be named as the best defender in the world – and it’s not Van Dijk. When quizzed on who he believes that particular gong by Marca, he pinpointed a former team-mate of his. "Gerard Pique, without a doubt,” he said. And when asked who was better out of Pique and Real Madrid foe Sergio Ramos, he went with the same answer. "Gerard Pique,” he repeated. Asked to explain his comments, Puyol then went on to explain the differences between himself and Pique. "Yes, he's the best central defender in the world. We're different,” he added. “He is key to Barcelona in everything he contributes, in his leadership. “He's a phenomenon and a great friend." Many Liverpool fans will certainly disagree with Puyol’s remarks as they are sure that Van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the world.
