Andy Ruiz Jr hits back at Anthony Joshua’s new ‘excuse’ about 2019 defeat

Andy Ruiz Jr has hit back at Anthony Joshua’s comments reflecting on their first fight. The unified heavyweight champion made no excuses in the immediate aftermath of his first career loss to the Mexican in June 2019. He went on to regain his titles in their rematch six months later. However, Joshua told JD Sports this week: “The first Ruiz fight, I know that wasn’t me. You can see in the ring walk and me standing in the ring, that wasn’t me.” When asked about these remarks, Ruiz Jr told Little Giant Boxing: “You know what? He can say whatever he wants. The main thing is I won [against] him in a spectacular way. “In the second fight, what was his excuse? He didn’t really look that good. I was halfway in shape and we still went the distance. He didn’t hurt me.” A trilogy fight between the pair is not on the cards for now as AJ is finalising an undisputed fight against Tyson Fury. Meanwhile, Ruiz Jr will return against Chris Arreola on April 24.
