Ajax denied the Eredivisie title: The season in Netherlands ends amid the coronavirus pandemic

Ajax will be denied the title, as Eredivisie will be stopped. The Netherlands Prime Minister has announced there will be no sporting events until September 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic.  According to Goal, Eredivisie will be finished with the current standings. Ajax, however, will be denied the title. For the first time in 64-year-history of the league, there will be no champion in the Netherlands.  It is interesting that in the neighbouring country, Belgium, the league was also stopped. However, on the contrary of the Netherlands, the league leader Club Brugge was announced champions.  It would have been unfair to the second place AZ Alkmaar, if Ajax were given the title, considering the fact that both clubs had the same amount of points before the season was stopped.  Both Ajax and AZ will represent the country in the Champions League. The Amsterdam club will start the campaign from the group stage, while Alkmaar will join the qualification round teams.  Feyenoord, 3rd placed, qualifies for Europa League group stage, while PSV Eindhoven and Willem II will start the campaign from the qualification.  One team, however, will suffer most. Utrecht has the same amount of points as Willem II, but will remain without European competitions.  Relegation zone clubs, Den Haag and Waalwijk will stay in Eredivisie, while second division leaders, Cambuur and De Graafschap will not promote.  More information to follow
