Tyson Fury is set to compete for the WBC ‘Mayan’ belt when he takes on Otto Wallin, September 14 in Las Vegas.
The WBC have a newly-started tradition to create special trinket belts and award them to fights taking place on the weekend of the two major Mexican holidays each year – Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.
However, the rival governing body president Paco Valcarcel of the WBO has spoken out and blasted the WBC.
He said:
“What the hell are these people from another sanctioning body doing handing out copper and silver Mayan pearl-studded aluminium Aztec belts in bouts sponsored by other organizations, to contenders who don’t really care about these palooka belts. This needs to stop, enough already.”
