Top 10 Athletes To Watch In Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games

Summer Olympics in Tokyo have just finished and now we are heading into the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, which will start on February 4th.

The 2020 Olympics should have taken place last year, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic the games were delayed to take place in 2021.

So in a few months we would have another amazing Olympics to witness. China's capital has been chosen to host the highly-anticipated sport event, having previously hosted the Summer Olympics back in 2008.

So ahead of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, let's take a look at some athletes, who will surely deserve your attention in the upcoming games.

1. Sara Takanashi

Sara Takanashi is only 24, but has already managed to achieve a huge success in ski jumping.

She broke a record for a female athlete with her 4 World Cup titles and she also holds the record among all ski jumpers for most World Cup wins with 60 victories.

Takanashi will surely have a huge success in Beijing and will reach the podium at minimum.

 

2. Mikaël Kingsbury

Sport: Freestyle Skiing

Country: Canada

Mikaël Kingsbury broke the records for the most men's moguls World Cup titles and has won the most medals at the Freestyle World Championships of any male competitor in history.

The Canadian is the reigning Olympic and world champion in the moguls, so the winning a medal in Beijing 2022 would not be difficult for him.

 

3. Mikaela Shiffrin

Sport: Alpine Skiing

Mikaela Shiffrin is an Olympic gold medalist and won four medals at the 2021 World Championships (including gold in Alpine combined).

The 26-year-old is also the youngest champion in Olympic Alpine skiing history, winning the most world cup slalom races (45) in history, and becoming the first Alpine skier to win the world championship in the same discipline (slalom) at four consecutive championships.

 

4. Francesco Friedrich

Sport: Bobsleigh

Francesco Friedrich leads the four-man bobsleigh team, who are the defending Olympic champions, and easily won the gold medal at the 2021 World Championships with a blistering time of 3:35.02 - 0.79 seconds faster than runners-up Latvia.

Beijing 2022 might become another stage for them to win medals for their country.

 

5. Suzanne Schulting

Sport: Short Track Speed Skating

Suzanne Schulting won gold in every event at the 2021 World Championships, becoming only the second woman and fourth skater in history to sweep the board at the championships. The 23-year-old may struggle to pull off the same record in Beijing, but it's worth tuning in just to watch her try.

 

6. Ireen Wüst

Sport: Speed Skating

Country: The Netherlands

The Netherlands are dominating the speed skating at the Winter Olympics, winning 121 total medals in the sport, as Ireen Wüst is responsible for 11 of those 121 medals.

She is the first athlete to have won a gold medal in an individual event at four different Winter Games, and should Wüst win gold again in Beijing, she will be the first and only person to have won gold at five editions of the Games (including the Summer Olympics).

 

7. Chloe Kim

Chloe Kim made history at PyeongChang 2018, as she became the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal when she won gold in the women's snowboard halfpipe at just 17 years old.

The American is the reigning world, Olympic and X Games champion in the halfpipe and the Winter Olympics next year could add a bit to her medal collection.

8. Charlotte Kalla

Sport: Cross-Country Skiing

Charlotee Kalla has become Sweden's most successful female cross-country skier of all time, after winning four medals in PyeongChang (including gold in the 15 km skiathlon) and taking her Olympic tally to nine medals.

The 34-year-old has hinted that Beijing 2022 will be her last Olympic Games, and though her legacy in Olympic and cross-country folklore is already cemented (Kalla has won multiple medals at all of the Olympics she's participated in).

 

9. Hanyū Yuzuru

Sport: Figure Skating

Country: Japan

Sports Hanyū Yuzuru has broken world records a remarkable 19 times, and is famously regarded as one of, the greatest male figure skater in history.

The Japanese is the reigning Olympic champion in the men's singles competition, and will surely be the man to beat in Beijing as he looks for a third consecutive title in the discipline.

 

10. Tina Hermann

Sport: Skeleton

Country: Germany

Tina Hermann has won the last three world championships in women's skeleton, and is the first four-time world champion in the event (she also has three golds in the mixed team event).

The 29-year-old finished outside the medals in her Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018 (finishing 5th), so Beijing 2022 might be the place she takes some medals.
