The Hakim Ziyech Chelsea problem that shows football faces transfer meltdown unless UEFA take action

Top agent Martin Reilly admits football’s lockdown and a delayed end to season 2019-20 will create a certain transfer market mess. The Premier League and other top leagues along with UEFA Champions League are suspended due to coronavirus outbreak.  UEFA have urged domestic leagues to end their season until June 30, however, that will make a mess for players in the summer transfer market.  With players coming out of contract and the summer transfer window scheduled to kick into gear as usual, huge problems could arise. Reilly feels it’ll take agreement from all areas for a delayed season to work properly. He explained: “I really don’t know what is going to happen with the transfer window. Nobody really knows anything as UEFA have not stated what is the guideline. Every governing body will be guided by a UEFA regulation, but there will have to be an agreement of some sort. “It’s no one’s fault, but it is a mess and no one knows how it will pan out. My view is that you can’t just scrap a season that is 80 per cent through, but there would need to be agreement on ways to make it work. “For example, clubs would need to contact each other and agree that all do month-to-month contracts with their existing squads until the current season is finished or give them a certain period. Most clubs have players on loan at the moment and it would need to be agreed they stayed. All of it needs uniformity. If you have players that you have loaned, they’d have to remain. They surely couldn’t go back. “As an example, Chelsea signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in February intending to become their player on July 1. Should this season be delayed until into next autumn, you’d imagine he couldn’t be allowed to go at that time as Ajax will want Ziyech to stay to try and win their league when it resumes. “At the same time, if Chelsea brings him in when originally agreed, they’d get to use him against other sides in the Premier League for the remaining games which they wouldn’t have been able to do so had the league finished as normal. Clubs may have signed players on pre-contracts to join in June from a team in the same league. Who do they play for if the season restarts in August? “Boys coming out of contract need to wait and see. The rules are if you are out of contract on June 30, you are free to join another club. But if the decision is to fulfil the season, clubs need players to fulfil it. “There must be clubs out there with two or three loans. If they are sent back along with three or four boys who are out of contract, they might not have enough players to fill a squad to play games.” Reilly added: “Clubs are suffering and need looked after, too. They need to be given time and backing financially to help with this. It’s an unprecedented situation. Hopefully, there’s not a recession and football clubs can fully recover.” Source: Daily Record
