Premier League CEO CONFIRMS clubs are against playing in neutral venues

Premier League CEO Richard Masters confirms clubs are against playing in neutral venues. During the Monday meeting the league authorities have discussed with the teams the ‘Restart Project’, which included playing the remaining 92 fixtures in 8 or 9 neutral venues.  However, some clubs have already united against that decision, claiming that they will lose the home advantage, crucial for gaining points and battling for relegation zone. It seems not only the teams from the bottom half of the table are against this point.  “Just to reiterate that, I think everybody would prefer to play home and away if at all possible. And I think it's clear to see that some clubs feel more strongly about that than others,” Masters told the Mirror. “It is an ongoing dialogue and obviously we've been talking to - since Covid-19 became an issue - we've been talking to the authorities about the conditions in which we could get the Premier League back up and running and taking all that advice on board. “But it is an ongoing dialogue. There is not much I can say about that, other than we are in contact with the authorities and listening to that advice while also representing club views in those discussions.” he added. The Time reported earlier that The Premier League could change major points in the ‘Restart Project’, allowing the club to play their home games as usual. According to the initial plan, the League should have chosen several stadiums as neutral venues that will host the remaining 92 matches. This point caused controversies among the clubs. In particular, Aston Villa, Brighton and Watford, later joined by West Ham United, Norwich City and Bournemouth, are against playing away from home.  The reason is simple. Those clubs that are battling in the relegation zone, mostly take points in their home venues. No surprise that they have united against the idea of ‘neutral venues’.  The Premier League fears other teams could join those 6 and vote against the ‘Restart Project’, which would mean cancelling the season. After Monday’s meeting the league could remove this point and allow the teams to play their home games at their stadiums.  Earlier, the UK government has announced they will allow sporting events in the country from June 1 if league authorities will guarantee security for the players and staff. The Premier League is planning a restart of the season on June 12.
