Paul Scholes: In any other era we might have won four, five, or six European Cups

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s team could have won 5 or even 6 Champions League titles, if there were not teams like Real Madrid-Galacticos and Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.  The Red Devils were a truly dominant team in the Premier League, winning 13 titles under Sir Alex Ferguson.  Manchester United has also been one of the best teams in Europe for many seasons. The number of Champions League semi-finals and finals is an indicator of the club's European success. Ferguson managed to win 2 UCL titles in 1999 and 2008. But Scholes believes they could have had much more.  Scholes refers to the times when they faced Vicente Del Bosque’s Real Madrid in 2000 and 2003 when speaking A Goal in One Podcast (via The Sun):  "We got absolutely battered in the Bernabeu one year. 3-1 it was in the first game but what a team that was. It's not far away from that Barcelona team. “They had the Brazilian Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Redondo was unreal, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Hierro, Iker Casillas in goal, that was a team that was just ridiculous. “We came up against some ridiculous teams. We did alright against them but Barcelona just had that edge over that great Real Madrid team.” Barcelona, on the other hand, faced Manchester United two times in two finals between 2009 and 2011.  Guardiola’s Barcelona was a revolutionary side that changed a lot in football in terms of tactics and style.  Scholes adds: “You could go right through the (Barcelona) team. In midfield, you had Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi.” “Henry on the left. Centre halves of Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol. Just unreal. “They're without doubt the best team I've played against. They're one of the best teams that has ever been. “We were quite unlucky really. In any other era we might have won four, five, or six European Cups.”
