Paul Merson has criticized Manchester United's trio following the club's latest Premier League game against Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils' disappointing season continued as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Eagles at Old Trafford on Saturday. Despite their dominance in possession, United struggled to create significant scoring opportunities against Palace's solid defense.
The match saw Amrabat making his full Premier League debut, playing out of position at left-back due to the unavailability of regular left-backs Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and Sergio Reguillon. Unfortunately, Amrabat's involvement led to a costly free-kick that resulted in Palace's winning goal. Later in the game, he was shifted to midfield.
Joining him in midfield were Mount and Fernandes, but this trio failed to generate the crucial chances required to level the score against Palace.
Paul Merson, commenting on the match, expressed his belief that Amrabat should have started in the central position. The pundit also highlighted the importance of United taking control of the game from the outset, as they tended to allow opposing teams to settle into the match, often lacking an aggressive approach in the opening 20 minutes.
Overall, Merson found United's performance disappointing, citing their struggle to create goal-scoring opportunities and a lack of clear tactical direction during most of the game.
"Hojlund is playing up front on his own and you don’t know if the wingers are going to cross it or not. It’s hard for him. He doesn’t get a lot of service. Mount, Casemiro and Fernandes don’t really know where they’re going or where they’re playing," he said, via Metro UK.
"It’s a big worry for Man Utd at the moment and another defeat. They’re a million miles off."
