Ozil had trained with the squad on Friday but wasn't pictured with the team when they arrived to Merseyside.
He has reportedly complained of pain in his knee and the Arsenal boss Unai Emery didn't want to risk him.
The Arsenal star hadn't started a league match in 6 weeks before returning to impress in the win over Burnley.
Unai Emery is also dealing with injuries of other key players, including Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal and Emile Smith Rowe.
