Former Liverpool striker John Barnes has urged Manchester United to beat Chelsea to the signing of West Ham ace Delcan Rice.
The Blues' boss Frank Lampard has highlighted Rice as a potential recruit as he looks to complete his squad overhaul. The 21-year-old has been utilised as a holding midfielder over the past few years but while he was a centre-back while part of Chelsea's academy.
However, Barnes thinks Rice should move to Old Trafford instead to further his development.
"Regarding the ongoing transfer rumours on Declan Rice, I am not sure that he would come into Manchester United and take over that defensive midfield role, especially as Nemanja Matic has recently signed a two-year contract," he said.
"However, United must look to the future and Rice is a good young English player and would be a good signing for United.
"Of course, he’s a West Ham player and from his own point of view if he must move on, I think Manchester United would be a good place for him."
