Manchester United sent warning over bringing Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has stated that Dean Henderson may not yet be ready to replace David de Gea as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper. Henderson has been on loan at Sheffield United for the last year-and-a-half, and has earned a praise for his displays for the Blades. On the other hand, de Gea has made a number of errors this season, including dawdling over a clearance which led to Everton 's Dominic Calvert-Lewin giving his side the lead on Sunday. However, despite the two stoppers' contrasting latest form, Given is not yet convinced Henderson is ready for the responsibility. In an interview with The Star, Given said: "It's maybe too soon for him to be No.1 at Manchester United but the season he's had- and we played them last year in the Championship with Sheffield United and he had two fantastic games then- it feels like he's gone to the next level, he's pushed himself on. "There's talk because David de Gea made a mistake at the weekend that he should be back as No.1 at United but I don't think it's as straightforward and simple as that. "If he did come back to Manchester United next season and was really neck and neck with David de Gea then it would be a big decision for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make, of course. "But for me, De Gea is still a fantastic goalkeeper and some of the saves he makes, he’s one of the best." Henderson, being a United academy product, has yet to make a senior appearance for the club, having gone out on loans to Stockport, Grimsby, Shrewsbury and now Sheffield United, while de Gea recently signed a lucrative contract until 2023, which sees him earn £350,000 a week.
