Manchester City handed boost in superstar defender race after contract dispute

Manchester City could be about to ‘pounce’ after one of the world’s leading defenders has failed to negotiate a contract extension with his current club. Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen to strengthen his defence. According to Bild, they are interested in Bayer Munich defender David Alaba, who has spent the most of his career at left-back but has seamlessly transitioned into the centre-back role this season. Alaba is looking for a deal worth ‘£18m a year’. But Bayern chiefs are hesitant to agree, believing the figure is ‘too much’. With just 12 months remaining on his current deal, Alaba may be sold on the cheap this summer to avoid losing him for free. That potential scenario is backed up by the player’s agent reportedly “threatening the scenario of a free transfer”. Guardiola worked with Alaba during his time in the Bundesliga, adding further weight to the possibility of a swoop. Source: teamtalk
