Lionel Messi retirement claim made by Argentina chief

Argentina FA president Claudio Tapia does not believe Lionel Messi is planning to retire from international football imminently. "We have the best in the world [Messi], which gives you more possibilities to do better," Tapia said. "[But] now is the time to allow him to chew the disappointment of what happened at the World Cup and I have no doubt he will continue." "I haven't spoken to him because it's not the time but I know what he feels for this jersey. Messi previously retired in 2016 after losing consecutive Copa America finals to Chile on penalties. The Barca star reversed his decision, however, eventual champions France eliminated Argentina by four goals to three. Rumours abounded that he would retire again after stating that he would not play for the Albicelestes again for the rest of 2018. Argentina will play Mexico in Cordoba on Friday and then again in Mendoza four days later in a pair of international friendlies.
