Jermaine Jenas urges Roman Abramovich to sign central defender

Chelsea have signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and now they are on the verge of completing their third signing of the summer as Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz edges ever closer to arriving at Stamford Bridge. Personal terms are thought to have already been agreed with a five-year contract put on the table. The Blues are unwilling to spend more than £70million - which is £20m less than the Bundesliga side are demanding. Once that deal goes through former Premier League ace Jermaine Jenas thinks Roman Abramovich should splash out on a central defender. "If they can bring in a top centre-half I think they can challenge Man City and Liverpool for the title with the players they have," Jenas told Football London. "But if they don't do something defensively they will just be battling it out for the top four again with the rest of them. "You can't go through a whole season as a team like Chelsea only keeping one clean sheet away from home and expect to challenge for titles. It's just not going to happen. Frank [Lampard] has got Chelsea into an FA Cup final, the top four this season and a decent run in the Champions League and I don't think anybody expected that in his first year. "With the players he's going to bring in I think they can push at the top end and they'll probably fall off at the turn of the year and finish in the top four comfortably. It will be a strong year for them next year." Abramovich is hoping to use how the coronavirus pandemic has affected many clubs to help Chelsea bridge the gap to the top. "In my opinion he's a top player, there's no denying that," Jenas added. "But so is Ruben Loftus-Cheek, so is Mason Mount and have we given up on Ross Barkley as well? "My point is I think some of these deals are too good to turn down. It's as simple as that. They know defensively what they need to work on and actually if you look at what Man City have got at their disposal, you kind of go 'I need to bolster out the squad' and that's how you get the job done. "Look at Liverpool, they've got big numbers in midfield. Frank's looking at his midfield and possibly might be thinking 'am I going to keep Kante as he's one of my favourite players but all of a sudden he's picked up a lot of injuries?' Is he going to stay or is he going to go? "What will happen with Jorginho, as he probably doesn't fancy him? I know Frank loves Kante but Jorginho will definitely be one in my opinion [to go], and probably someone like Ross Barkley as well. "If that happens and they get Kai Havertz in and you'd think that's a really solid midfield with goals, creativity and that combative nature to it. He's a player who everyone wants but Chelsea are probably in a really fortunate position right now where the other teams will probably play it a bit safer." Source: Express
