Jenson Button has explained how drivers’ salaries work in his new book “How to be an F1 driver”.
Lewis Hamilton, a former team-mate of Button, is on course to win his sixth Drivers’ Championship at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
But that may not bring any financial benefits to the 34-year-old.
“Some drivers will earn a $1million (£773,000) bonus if they win a race. Just one race,” Button wrote. “The funny thing, though, is that you don’t normally get a bonus for winning a Drivers’ Championship. It’s the Constructors’ Championship that’s worth the big bucks because that’s when the team gets the large payout - €100m (£86.1m) or something - from the FIA, and you can but a lot of team-branded polo shirts with that.”
