He insisted he was going to kill 'that f****r: Roy Keane remembers the day Cantona was punched by Turkish police officer in Istanbul

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has revealed how Eric Cantona had lost his head after the Champions League match against Turkish side Galatasaray in Istanbul.  Manchester United had been knocked out by their rivals after a 3-3 draw at the Old Trafford and a goalless draw in Turkey.  Cantona himself got a red card for insulting referee Kurt Röthlisberger. The Frenchman was then hit over his head by Turkish policeman on the way to the tunnel of the stadium.  “In the dressing room Eric went crazy. He was determined to go back outside to sort out the rogue cop who'd been wielding his truncheon.” Keane wrote on his book King Eric: Portrait of the Artist who changed English football (cited by the Daily Mirror) “Eric was a big, strong lad. He was serious. He insisted he was going to kill 'that f****r'. “It took the combined efforts of the manager, (assistant) Brian Kidd and a few of the players to restrain him. “Normally I wouldn't have backed off a fight but even I wasn't up for this one. There were a lot of Turks out there!”  It was a tough day for the Red Devils, as their bus was bricked on the way to the hotel.  Sir Alex Ferguson has later described that night they faced kind of hostility that did not happen elsewhere.
