Gareth Southgate explains what surprised him about Callum Hudson-Odoi before England recall

Gareth Southgate has praised the attitude of Callum Hudson-Odoi after the Chelsea star was called up to the latest England squad. The 19-year-old has had a decent return from injury following his long lay-off when he ruptured his Achilles' tendon. Southgate was so impressed with the attitude of the youngster that he was ready to get him back with the senior sides. "We were surprised by how quickly he was back [from injury], that is a credit to his dedication and motivation, also everyone at Chelsea with the way that they managed his injury," Southgate said. "He is on his way back because with those injuries it can take a while to hit your absolute best. Of course, he is a young player so he is still learning and improving. But already in the games that he has played, we can see his level. He is pushing those other wide players to start in the team. "It is great to have him back involved. I know that he will be excited about that. "Also an important message. Sometimes we will move players back into the U21s at times if we think that it is the right thing. He acquitted himself brilliantly within that, his attitude was fantastic. "He played very well in the games and so we got absolutely the response that we wanted from that."
