Frank Lampard explains why Raheem Sterling did not take England penalty

Frank Lampard has suggested that Raheem Sterling isn't a penalty taker at heart after the England forward did not take a spotkick in the EURO 2020 final defeat. The Three Lions opened the scoring already in the second minute, thanks to Luke Shaw’s goal. However, Leonardo Bonucci equalised the score in the 67th minute. The winner couldn’t be decided both in the main and extra times so the game headed into the penalty shootout. Italy picked up a 3-2 win on penalties and were crowned EURO 2020 champions for the second time in their history. Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were all among the England penalty strikers, with the last three missing it. Sterling, himself, stepped up to score the decisive penalty in Manchester City's 2019 Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea at Wembley, but has missed his last three for Pep Guardiola's team. When asked why the 26-year-old did not take one against Italy, former Chelsea manager Lampard suggested it was as important for players to decline to take one. "I'm not sure that Raheem is aboslutely a penalty taker at heart," he told BBC Sport. "Sometimes you have to give as much credit to [those who] say 'I'm not feeling this for whatever reason'. I know he's had a good tournament." Source - MEN Join us on Telegram!/ Follow us on Twitter!
