Former Real Madrid president takes aim at Premier League after Liverpool loss

Former Real Madrid chief Ramon Calderon thinks Atletico Madrid's win over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie proves that La Liga is superior to the Premier League. The Reds have been defeated 1 – 0 at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday night as Saul Niguez’s fourth-minute goal and Atletico’s excellent defence secured their win in the first leg. Jurgen Klopp's side are leading the Premier League table with 76 points, while Atletico are sitting on the 4th place of the La Liga table. Calderon, who was Madrid president between 2006-2009, thinks it just shows that Spain's top tier is stronger than England's. He wrote on Twitter to say: "The match between @LFC and @Atleti triggers again the debate between Premier and La Liga, and it's a clear prove of which competition is stronger. @LFC is leader with 25 points ahead of the 2nd, while Atletico is 4th and 13 points behind the leader." Responding to fans comments, he added: "I understand the point of view of the ones that talking about the debate between Premier & La Liga linked to the match between @LFC and @Atleti saying that it's only the first leg. I know it, but the image given in it was clear. There weren't shots on target from @LVP in 90 minutes."
