Why Man City might miss out on the Champions League next season even if they win the title

Manchester City, the reigning European champions, are currently favored to clinch the Premier League title in the 23/24 season, following a strong start.

Their recent 6-1 victory against Bournemouth propelled them to the top of the table. While City are expected to secure a top-four finish, an interesting Champions League predicament looms for their owners, the City Football Group.

This situation arises due to another team within their group, Spanish side Girona, making an impressive start in La Liga. The Catalans currently lead the domestic table with 31 points from 12 matches, two points ahead of Real Madrid.

UEFA regulations prevent multiple teams under the same ownership from participating in the same European competition, potentially posing a challenge for the City Football Group.

To address this issue, the group could consider selling the Spanish outfit or reducing their ownership stake to avoid becoming majority stakeholders. Currently, they hold a 47% share in Girona.

Notably, Manchester United faced a similar situation when British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressed interest in purchasing the club, but it was later clarified that he intended to acquire a minority stake.

As City continues their Champions League campaign, these ownership intricacies add an extra layer of intrigue to their pursuit of success in the European competition.
