What would it take Chelsea to sign Frenkie de Jong?

Frenkie de Jong is reportedly a target for Chelsea and Manchester United, with both English clubs vying against Paris Saint-Germain for the Barcelona midfielder. Yet, recent reports suggest that PSG have shifted their interest from de Jong to Gavi, while Bayern Munich entered the chat.

Earlier reports from Sport suggested that De Jong's future at Barcelona is uncertain, and he may consider an exit in the upcoming summer transfer window if a suitable offer arises. Despite attempts to extend his contract, no progress has been made, casting doubt on his continuation with the club. However, the 26-year-old has denied any rumours about him leaving Barcelona in the near future.

"There are a lot of fake news on the press. Some of you should feel ashamed. This has to stop," said De Jong in a press conference.

It was also reported that De Jong is the highest-paid player in the Barcelona squad, with talks of substantial earnings exceeding €20 million (£17m/$25m) net annually for the past two seasons, following his wage compromise during the pandemic.

However, the Dutch midfielder also denied these speculations by stating: "People invented numbers of my salary".

As for his career plans De Jong remarked: "I am very happy at Barca, I hope to stay for many years".

It was rumored that Chelsea are prepared to offer a transfer fee close to €100 million, a figure in line with Barcelona's demands. Notably, Manchester United had previously submitted an offer of €85 million, including add-ons, which was accepted by Barcelona. However, the deal fell through due to the player's reluctance to relocate.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are currently the most likely destination for the Dutch player in the Premier League if he were to leave Barcelona. In the last days it has been reported that Tottenham and Manchester United are also considering signing the talented midfielder.
