In a shocking disclosure by a former financial advisor to Manchester City, the ominous possibility of relegation from the Premier League hangs heavily over the club should they be found guilty on all 115 counts.
The reigning champions find themselves embroiled in allegations concerning their financial practices spanning the period from 2009 to 2018. The gravity of the accusations is further compounded by additional claims that imply a lack of cooperation from the club during the course of the investigations.
Former City finance advisor, Stefan Borson, shed light on the severity of the situation during an interview on talkSPORT. Borson emphasized that the scale of the allegations is unparalleled, surpassing previous cases involving other clubs like Everton and Forest.
He unequivocally stated that if the charges are substantiated, relegation from the Premier League is an inevitable and inescapable consequence.
"The scale is on a completely different level [to Everton and Forest]. There can be no question that this will end in at least relegation – that’s no question, if those charges are proven.
“There’s a suggestion of conspiracy over effectively a 10-year period. They [ Premier League ] are suggesting that City’s main sponsorship agreements are not for £50-60m but are actually for £8m and the whole thing was a sham.
“If proven, this is super serious. Nobody would argue with that. City themselves in their submission – I promise you, because they’ve said it to CAS [Court of Arbitration for Sport] – will say this is an allegation of the most serious nature.”
