Mark Webber: “Lewis Hamilton could match Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles”

Lewis Hamilton could match Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles, according to the former F1 star Mark Webber. Hamilton won his fifth title and that outs the Brit level with Argentine driver Juan Manuel Fangio with only Schumacher ahead of the pair. “To get five is truly exceptional, it’s very, very special — he is somehow finding ways to motivate himself and continue to improve,” Webber said. “He has got the environment around him that he wants. “He is the beacon of the team and he knows how he wants them to operate around him to make him fire up. “I think the middle of his career he was struggling for direction and motivation in the McLaren operation in ‘11 and ‘12 but then under (Mercedes team boss) Toto Wolff, he’s found a really incredible second phase of his career. “The sky’s the limit, he still looks like he’s pretty young mentally in terms of energy and he could probably go for Michael’s record. “Seven is totally on the table. Eight is only one more but the difference between seven and eight ... to win the next three on the bounce is a lot. Seven is doable, but eight is the big one.”
