"I don't think I could do what he did": Paul Scholes admits one Liverpool player has been better in some aspects than he was

Paul Scholes has praised Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and shared his perspective on the ongoing debate comparing the two midfielders.

While Scholes and Gerrard were teammates for the England national team, they were fierce rivals at the club level throughout their playing careers. Over the years, fans of both Liverpool and Manchester United have engaged in discussions about who was the superior player.

During their time representing England, managers had a wealth of midfield talent to choose from, including Scholes, Gerrard, and Chelsea's Frank Lampard. Scholes played a crucial role at United team managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, both domestically and in Europe. On the other hand, Gerrard was an iconic figure for Liverpool, leading them to victories in the Champions League, UEFA Cup, and FA Cup.

When asked about the ongoing debate comparing himself and Gerrard, Scholes acknowledged that Gerrard was more of an athlete than he was. He also expressed doubt that he could replicate Gerrard's memorable performances at Anfield if they were to switch places.

"I can't answer that... Gerrard's a great player," he said on FIVE's YouTube channel (via Liverpool Echo). "I'm not saying myself, we're different, very different.

"He's an athlete [what separates them], he was more of a match-winner, but he was probably in a team where he had to be. I was more part of a team, he was more individual, I think."

Ex-United star added: "I wouldn't be able to do what he did at Liverpool, whether he could do what I did at United, I don't know. I don't see why not, I don't think I could do what he did at Liverpool."
