Gary O'Neil opens up on Matheus Nunes's departure following his move to Manchester City

Wolverhampton manager Gary O'Neil has opened up on Matheus Nunes' departure to Manchester City and extended his best wishes to the midfielder.

The 25-year-old made a move to Manchester City for approximately £53 million on transfer deadline day. This transfer followed a lengthy saga during which the Portugal international went on strike while at Molineux.

Nunes had previously joined the Wanderers from Sporting Club just a year ago, and his performance in the Premier League clearly left a strong impression on Pep Guardiola, prompting the reigning champions to make a significant investment in him.

During an interview on TalkSPORT (quoted by Manchester City News), O'Neil acknowledged that the midfielder's actions in trying to force the transfer weren't ideal for Wolves but also spoke highly of the Portuguese ace's talent.

“It’s difficult for me to talk about now because Matheus is obviously at Manchester City. I don’t want to talk too much about Manchester City’s players. That wouldn’t have been how I chose to handle it,” he stated.

“I know players nowadays have a lot of people advising them on how best to do things. As a club, we were always really clear on how the process would go. We had a valuation for Matheus. We also had things we needed to try and get in place to make sure we could replace him within the next few days.

“But before that time with Matheus. A very talented boy. He’s a good kid, works his socks off every single day for us. Hopefully the move goes well for him.”
