English commentator Gary Neville names Liverpool as the leading club capable of challenging Manchester City in their Premier League domination.
"At the moment, the one team which has proved that [it can challenge City] over the past five or six years are Liverpool," stated Nevile via Sky Sports, saying that Jurgen Klopp's side has the main requirements for that - a great squad and a great manager.
Manchester City secured their fifth Premier League title in the past six years after Arsenal lost to Nottingham Forest on May 21.
Speaking of the Citizens, the Englishman mentions that this season the squad under Guardiola has been the best one and the one which he would be the least keen to play against.
Other than Manchester City, Liverpool are the only team that have won the Premier League title since 2017. Despite having a significantly lower net spend during that period, the Reds managed to challenge City closely on two occasions, narrowly missing out on the title by just one point.
This season, however, Klopp's squad has been playing below their standards, and are currently in fifth place in the table with 66 points. A week ago there was even a sparkle of hope that the Reds could make it to the Top Four, staying behind Manchester United and Newcastle United with just one point, but both Howe's and ten Hag's sides picked up points shortly after and secured their spots firmly.
"I know they have dropped well below those standards this season but [they can] get back to those standards next season because they have proven they can do that before," concluded the pundit.
