England national team coach Gareth Southgate provided an update about Arsenal star Bukayo Saka's injury in a post-match talk.
Last night England faced Malta, their first opponent for the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament. The game concluded in a 4-0 overwhelming score with the victory of the English side. Towards the end of the first half, Saka's ankle twisted when a player from Malta tackled him. The 21-year-old needed medical attention for a few minutes and then returned to the game while visibly limping.
"He's good. We just didn't want to take a chance with him given the scoreline," stated Southgate, yet alleviated fears that the Gunner might have picked on serious damage.
In the final moments of stoppage time, Saka seemed to regain some mobility as he took a powerful shot, forcing goalkeeper Henry Bonello to make a diving save. However, at halftime, he was substituted by Phil Foden.
Next, England will take on North Macedonia at Old Trafford, optimistic to keep their dominance in the group.
