"From what I told": Fabrizio Romano says Manchester City tried to sign £60m Chelsea player in January

Manchester City made an attempt to secure a loan deal for Chelsea's left-back Marc Cucurella during the previous January transfer window, according to the sports journalist Fabrizio Romano.

This move was reminiscent of the recent summer window, where Cucurella was linked with a loan move to Manchester United in the final days, but that potential deal ultimately fell through.

City were rumored to be interested in the 25-year-old player shortly before he completed his £60 million transfer to Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer transfer window of 2022.

Romano shared some behind-the-scenes information regarding City's interest in the Spanish player in a recent video on his YouTube channel.

He said: “It’s also important to say that for Marc Cucurella, there was something even in January.

“From what I’m told, and this is exclusive information, something behind the scenes, last January, January 2023, Manchester City, in a secret way, presented a proposal for Marc Cucurella, it was a loan with a buy option clause, not mandatory, that was rejected by Chelsea.”
