Dillian Whyte wary of ‘dangerous’ Alexander Povetkin as Brit prepares to make boxing return

Dillian Whyte admits he is wary of Alexander Povetkin ahead of their fight. They’ll collide on August 22. Given all the lockdown restrictions and social distancing that have plagued the past four months, it hasn’t been easy for Whyte to get into his prime condition. “It’s been tough because, obviously, the fight is on, then it’s not on, then there’s rescheduling and that, but for me, it’s been alright for me because I had weight to shift and I had to get into shape anyway,” he said. “For me, it wasn’t too bad. It wasn’t too much of an adjustment. Just keep training, keep getting better and improving. So I just did that in the meantime. It wasn’t big news that I needed to get in better shape and lose a bit of weight so I just said OK, I’ve got a bit more time to get [my weight] down.” While losing weight was one part of it, sparring is another major part of camp. “Yeah, it’s been hard. I haven’t been able to bring in a sparring partner,” he said. “The good thing is, I brought a few guys with me who are middleweights and light-heavyweights and stuff so, I’ve been able to use them. But it’s good for me also, because I can work on my speed and timing. “So I’m just waiting to see what’s going on next week, in two weeks time with the government’s rulings and what’s happening, because it’s changing every week. Then I’ll bring some heavy guys in for three or four weeks to do some heavy sparring. It’s been frustrating. Ideally, I would have liked to have started sparring already but it is what it is.” Whyte is under no illusions that this will be one of the toughest fights of his career. “He’s probably the most technical fighter I’ve ever fought,” he conceded. “He jabs well, he throws good right hands, he hits the body well and he’s got a killer left hook, a killer overhand right and that’s actually what rocked David Price early in their fight before he landed the left hook. “He’s only ever lost to two reigning world champions. He lost to Klitschko who was reigning strong at the time and Joshua who was reigning strong at the time, so it goes to show 40 something fights and only two losses, that’s no joke.” Source: talksport
