Chelsea face £70 million price tag for top defensive priority in 2024 transfer pursuit

Chelsea are reportedly keen on securing the services of Sporting CP prodigy Ousmane Diomande.

Although the Blues have been monitoring the talented central defender for some time, a January transfer appears unlikely.

Football transfers, reveal that the West Londoners might have to shell out a hefty €80 million (£70 million) to meet Diomande's release clause.

The  Portuguese outfit is adamant about not letting go of their rising star for anything less, leaving the Premier League giants with a decision to break the bank for the promising talent.

Diomande has been making waves in the Liga Portugal league, showcasing both physical prowess and technical finesse. With the potential to evolve into a top-notch Premier League defender, he could serve as a long-term replacement for stalwart Thiago Silva in Chelsea's backline.

The report suggests preliminary talks have taken place regarding a potential transfer, but any move is likely to materialize only at the end of the current campaign.

Joining a prestigious club like Chelsea, and working under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, could be an enticing prospect for the 20-year-old, given the Argentine manager's track record of nurturing young talents.

Despite significant investments in defensive reinforcements, Chelsea have struggled defensively in recent months. The club's vulnerability at the back has raised questions about their ability to finish the season on a strong note.
