Chelsea want to begin contract renewal talks with defender Antonio Rudiger.
Rudiger, who played just 45 minutes this season, enters the final two years of his contract at the end of the season.
The Blues want to head off any doubt over his long-term future by signing him to an extension.
Manchester City and Tottenham will both be in the market for a new central defender next summer.
Rudiger missed the start of the season as he continued to recover from the knee surgery he underwent at the back end of the previous season.
The German international then suffered a hip injury in September and underwent surgery to clear up the problem.
He is expected to be out until December.
