Brendan Rodgers explains why he didn’t give Jamie Carragher a coaching role

Former Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers says he wanted to give Jamie Carragher a coaching role in his first season at the Merseyside club.  47-year-old coach reveals the defender did not accept his offer as he wanted to play rather than become his assistant.  Rodgers, who is currently in charge of Leicester City, signed a contract with Liverpool in 2012. That time, Carragher was entering his 16th season for the Reds. Former LFC coach says at first the Englishman agreed to work as a coach, but things were tougher when it came to actual negotiations in summer of 2012.  “It was pretty straight forward. It was funny because I had done an interview earlier on in the year when we had played Liverpool and Jamie asked me that question.” Rodgers said during The Beautiful Game Podcast (via LiverpoolECHO) “It was straight forward. I was going in with the intention of asking him to come into my coaching staff rather than the playing side. “But when I actually met him and joined as manager and met him before we started pre-season, my communication with him seemed more as though he wanted to be on the playing side and still focus on playing. “If that was the case this wasn't going to be the role for him.” he added.  As an example, Rodgers brought Kolo Toure, who played for him both at Liverpool and Celtic. When it came to the situation that Kolo was not sure how to continue his career, he got an offer from his coach to become an assistant.
