Bild: Lothar Matthaus offers to replace Manuel Neuer

Germany national team goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was linked with an exit even when the World Cup 2018 was on the helm as the Germans failed to qualify for the play-off group stage becoming one of four teams to head an early exit from the tournament. Germany national team ex player Lothar Matthaus has revealed his opinion on the case in his interview to German publication Bild and stated that Neuer is the only player among the champions of World Cup 2014, who should be replaced. “Neuer has no more got the same form and confidence as he had before sustaining the injury. He hasn’t yet restored his previous form of a worldwide goalkeeper. The keepers of his quality should play in club level. Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller are the most famous players in Germany national team, however, their time has passed. I’m deeply surprised with Joachim Low’s decision to name those players. “I think ter Stegen deserved to play the match of that importance for his national team,” Germany World Cup 1990 champion stated.
