Ben Godfrey reveals what Gareth Southgate told him after Everton defender received England call

Ben Godfrey has revealed what Gareth Southgate told him after learning he had been called up to England's provisional squad for this summer's Euro 2020. The 23-year-old was rewarded for his fantastic form throughout the campaign by being named in the 33-man Three Lions setup, which will be reduced to 26 by the time the tournament comes along. The Everton centre-back believes that versatility has been key to him being given his first senior England call-up as he revealed what the national team manager discussed with him. Godfrey told evertonfc.com : “Gareth Southgate called me to tell me I was in the provisional squad and that he was looking forward to me joining up with the team. “The manager [Southgate] spoke about my versatility and I think being able to play across the backline for Everton during the season helped show that. “I knew he was at Goodison for the game against Wolves [Everton’s 1-0 win on 19 May] but you don’t really think much about it as your focus is just to play well for Everton. “There is a lot of competition to play for England as well so it’s about showing your quality over a long period of time. “When you look at the quality of defenders we’ve got, and the players who didn’t make the squad, I know it is an achievement to have made the provisional squad, and now I just want to work hard and see what comes.” Source- Liverpool ECHO Join us on Telegram!/ Follow us on Twitter!
