Barcelona visited San Sebastian with a hope of finally winning at Anoeta stadium against Real Sociedad. The Blaugranas haven’t managed to pick up three points in this stadium since 2007. They were in need of the three points in order not to be too far from Real Madrid, which they are going to face in coming weekend.
However, Real Sociedad had different plans for this game. They made sure that Anoeta remains a house of horrors for the Catalan side. Barcelona were totally outclassed by the Basque side in the first half of the match, as they couldn’t even enter their penalty box up until the 41st minute.
After a goalless first half, Sociedad were the first to make a change in the scoreboard, as Willian Jose was the first to latch on the rebound near the penalty spot, and he produced a fantastic header which went inside the left post in the 53rd minute. Ter Stegen was unable to save this shot.
Just 6 minutes later Lionel Messi came to rescue his side once again. Neymar produced a well-taken pass to the penalty box, and the Argentine was quick to react to it and make a shot, which sent the ball into the bottom right corner.
Howbeit, this goal didn’t change the order of things in the encounter, as Real Sociedad kept on being firm. Their efforts led to another goal in the 76th minute. Juanmi put the ball into the net, but the assistant referee wrongly disallowed this goal by raising his flag for an offside.
In spite of unending efforts from both teams to score again, neither of them managed to grab the winner. Barcelona earned just one point and are now behind their main rival Real Madrid by 6 points. Now they will have a Wednesday clash against Hercules in Copa del Rey and then host Real Madrid at Camp Nou.
Real Sociedad 1-1 Barcelona
Goals: Willian Jose 53′ – Lionel Messi 59′
