Aston Villa icon predicts change in Dean Smith's tactics ahead of Arsenal clash

Gabby Agbonlahor thinks that Dean Smith will change up Aston Villa’s 3-5-2 formation for the Arsenal game on Friday. Villa have played in a 3-5-2 formation for their last 5 games, but the switch in system provided mixed results for the team. However, Smith has used the new formation in an attempt to get the best out of his star strikers, but while Danny Ings is thriving, Ollie Watkins is struggling to adapt to his new role. There have been calls for Smith to revert to the 4-3-3 formation that his players are used to, and that is a sentiment echoed by Agbonlahor, Villa’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer. Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor has called for the Villa head coach to revert to the 4-3-3 formation that his players are used to.
“I don’t think he’ll play the back five anymore. Villa will change that formation and look to play a 4-3-3.   “I feel like Dean Smith has played that formation because they were playing against Romelu Lukaku [and Chelsea] where they did well, even though they lost.   “Then they played Man United and got a result, they played Spurs and were OK, and then they played Wolves who play with five at the back, so maybe he wanted to match them up.”   “Arsenal play four at the back, so I think Smith will change his formation and go with the 4-3-3, I’ve always said I want to see Aston Villa in a 4-3-3, an attacking team,” added Agbonlahor.   “I don’t really like the five at the back. I like our centre-halves, but with that formation, you’re going to have centre-halves on the ball a lot when they’re not as good on the ball as the midfielders.”
