"Always rated him": Glenn Hoddle thinks Manchester City man is currently league's best player in his position

Glenn Hoddle has praised John Stones for his improvement at Manchester City this season, claiming he has become the best centre-back in the Premier League. Stones is currently enjoying his playing time under Pep Guardiola, while he also earned his place back in England national team. “John Stones has been excellent. There isn’t a better English centre-back there at the moment. To be honest, I’ve always rated him from day one when I saw him at Everton," Hoddle said. “He’s always going to be a good player on the ball but he went backwards on his defending. He took too many risks and came unstuck. “(Stones) couldn’t work out what was a risk and what wasn’t a risk. He’s not the only centre-back in the country to do that. “There’s risk-taking all over the pitch nowadays. John Stones has worked that out.” Then he added: “(I don’t know) whether that’s been within himself and the coaching staff at Manchester City and his manager, or he’s just grown through experience. “But (Stones) is as good a centre-back as any in the country at this moment, and I’m putting all the foreign centre-backs in there as well. “Credit to him. He’s got his head down and worked really hard. I think he’s had some issues off the field. That does affect a player no doubt about it. “Credit where it’s due. As an England supporter, I’m delighted he’s back playing well.”
