Jose Mourinho is in need of defensive reinforcements after a host of in different defensive display, while Eric Bailly’s long-term injury means the Portuguese is short of numbers. Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague understands United are interested in Godin’s Atleti team-mate Jose Gimenez, but his £57.8m buy-out clause could put them off. As a result, The Sun claim Mourinho could turn his attention to bringing Uruguay international Godin to Old Trafford instead.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Henrikh Mkhitaryan "has to play better" than his rivals for places in the first team if he wants to be given more minutes. "He has to do more, it's as simple as that," said Mourinho. "We have big expectations at this club, lots of players for these positions, and he has to play better than [Juan] Mata, [Jesse] Lingard, [Anthony] Martial - he has to play better than them. It's as simple as that. "Every manager wants to win matches, every manager in the world wants to play the players that he thinks can help the team more, and I'm no different."

Roma fullback Antonio Rudiger has played down speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League. It has been reported that both Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in the 23-year-old. But, speaking ahead of Roma's Europa League clash with Austria Vienna, Rudiger says getting back to full fitness is his top priority. "There's a lot of talk about changes in the squad, but I'm really happy to play for Roma. I'm not bothered about transfer rumours," he said. "In the end, I'm happy to be healthy again. It wasn't easy but now I can play again. I'm ready to play [on Thursday]. I hope for the best, but it's the coach's decision in the end."

Jose Mourinho has given his reasons for bringing Bastian Schweinsteiger out of the wilderness at Manchester United. At this moment we have no problems in midfield but whenever you have problems he will be another option. “It’s a human decision based on training numbers and methods but it is also a decision that can turn out be positive for the group.
